There’s poison flowing into the water table. There’s new plastic born every day and old plastic outliving us all. Some shirts we wear were made in a childhood-stealing kind of place. We don’t know if the butterflies are lonely or elephants afraid or bees exhausted, but it sure seems that way. The space race has slowed and the world still bets on horses. There isn’t an honest politician in the whole lot, despite any of their intentions to be.
In the teeth of it all, we do our best to be the good guys. And the good guys can’t save the rainforest or the whales or dying languages without caring and taking care. So we take care of each other and in the end, after all the expansive good we do, loving our people is the best thing we ever did. It’s the rooted system underneath our flowering mini-worlds. It’s the easiest way to build. Break everything down to its tiniest parts and you can see that biological survival may be driven by competition, but that social survival is driven by cooperative, binding love, by that feeling that magnetizes you and steals your rationality and holds tight and weighs heavy. Love is the great motivator, it is armor, it’s a changer, and it’s happening to you right now. Love your lover, love your love, and keep it. Get married, Ali and Cole; it’s for the very best.
