Healing & Dealing
01:18
|

The coyotes in the yard yip and yell in their alien language
and it scares me for no reason
and it stays with me all season.
It’s not because of their sharp hands and mouths.
It’s not because the neighbor’s dog went missing on Sunday.
It’s because I can’t understand the tone with which they scream at the winter moon -
I can’t tell what they want
if they want
and, look, I know that these coyotes are not actually coyotes
but something bigger that I can’t get past.
I know that when I shiver it’s not just because I’m cold.
The gifts under the tree aren’t gifts
the tree is not a tree.
These days I am dealing & healing in metaphor.
The tree is rarely ever a tree.

Rebel Hope

can you believe it’s
been three years since the snake pit
did you ever leave it
that bedroom so poorly lit
where the space heat
was never enough for me
where you hummed melodies
notes I could never reach
I don’t miss you all that much all the time
I do miss you some some times
some times some times
regardless
it won’t be a bad christmas
it’ll be a rad christmas
these holidays, these holy days
I’m a red leader
I’m a green a gold leader
I hid my rebel hope
somewhere you can’t go
where it plays on a loop
where it will survive you
can you believe it’s
been three years since the last ditch
you left for the abyss
still singin’ but I can’t hear it
I found in my coat
ten bucks and letter you wrote
about loving me and did I know?
I did, very much so
I don’t miss you all that much all the time
I do miss you some some times
some times some times
in spite of it
it won’t be a bad christmas
it’ll be a rad christmas
these holidays, these holy days
I’m a red leader
I’m a green a gold leader
I hid my rebel hope
somewhere you can’t go
where it plays on a loop
where it will survive you
I had a dream and
an hourglass full of sand
followed me where I went
half spent, half unspent
the snow on the trees
will fall down on top of me
then the sun on the beach
will erase that memory
not all the time but some times
not all the time but some times
not all the time but some times
not all the time but some times

Jenille's Gonna Love It
05:02

when we were the kings of suburbia
building fortresses in the snow
that the night painted blue first
then street-lamp marigold
bright like they were lit from within
bioluminescent
bright like we were lit from within
lighthouse children
when love was plastered on us
as arrogantly as a ship’s name
and we wanted for nothing really
just plastic piled in a red sleigh
bright like it was lit from within
bioluminescent
bright like we were lit from within
I’m terminally reminiscent
can’t paper snowflakes (snowflake)
can’t a faux Douglas Fir (Faux Fir)
can’t Christmas over the phone
can’t the person you wish you were
stand in for the real thing?
stand in for the real thing?
I wanted to strangle you in tinsel
when my feelings got too big for me
I wanted to tangle you in garland
string your guts around the tree
bright like it was lit from within
bioluminescent
bright like we were lit from within
heated, radiant
can’t a holiday special (can’t a holiday)
can’t cinnamon in a candle (in a candle)
can’t visions of sugarplums
can’t fake wood under the mantel
stand in for the real thing?
stand in for the real thing?
